[...]While working with tape loops he became fascinated with the possibilities of "phase shifting": i.e., playing two or more identical loops at slightly different sppeds, so that the repetitions gradually move apart ("out of phase") from on another and eventually arrive again at synchronization. The two earlist compositions exploitiong this techenique, the tape piece It's Gonna Rain (1965) and Come Out (1966), and based on prerecorded fragments of speech, while a third, Melodica (1966, also for tape), applies the idea to a simple melodic sequence.
